G2 deny 9INE an upset chance
IEM Cologne 2023 champions G2 headed into the Gamers8 tournament looking for consistency, as they tried to shake-off their stop-and-go rhythm, especially after winning a big tournament. They kicked off their campaign in Riyadh against the Poles, 9INE.
The first map was 9INE's home map of Vertigo. G2 took the opening pistol starting on the defensive side. G2 started with six in a row before mynio and hades turned around a 2v3 to help 9INE get their first round. 9INE made it four in a row before a huNter- triple helped G2 get back on the board. A couple of impactful multi-kill rounds from hades saw 9INE end the half with a 6-9 deficit.

A B split helped G2 take the both the pistols of the map but a hades quad-kill saw 9INE reply with the force buy. The force buy win helped 9INE tie up the game at 10-10. G2 retook the lead with an upgraded pistol buy and a triple from jks. Both teams kept trading rounds before G2 pulled three in a row to take the game to overtime.
9INE picked up the map at 19-17 with hades topping the scoreboard with 30 kills.
The second map was G2's pick of Ancient and it was 9INE who picked up the pistol starting on the defensive side. A Goofy 1v2 on the A site saw 9INE start with a 3-0 lead. 9INE started with a 6-0 lead before G2 got their first T round. G2 converted it into five in a row to bring the game to a one-round game. A HooXi 1v1 on the B site helped G2 end the half at 7-8, with the Poles taking a one-round lead.
G2 picked up the second pistol and then took the lead after picking up the conversion against the pistols. After four straight rounds to kick off the second half, a mynio 1v1 against jks on the B site saw 9INE put up their first T round. It was G2 though, who held on to their map pick with a 16-12 as huNter- was G2's star performer with 30 kills and a 103.2 ADR.
The series decider was played on Nuke with G2 starting on the CT side. 9INE picked up the pistol but a NiKo and huNter- double helped G2 secure the force buy, with NiKo closing out the round with a knife on Kylar. G2 went on to take seven in a row before 9INE got their second T round. A hades 1v3 saw 9INE pick their third after two in a row from G2 but it was G2 who ended the half with a 11-4 lead.

9INE took a much needed second pistol and it was 11-7 before the guns came out on both sides. jks and m0NESY converted a 2v3 to give G2 their first round. G2 seemed to be cruising to a comfortable win but 9INE made G2 sweat although they held on to close the map at 16-12.
