launders falls for API scam
Well known Counter-Strike caser, launders took to X yesterday to reveal shocking news with regard to his steam account. The Counter-Strike caster and fanatic, held an exquisite inventory boasting high tier Counter-Strike skins including several knives entailing sought-after patterns.
launders' post on X showed a screenshot of his recent trade history with an unknown account, taking away his whole Counter-Strike inventory. He mentioned that his skins were stolen and initially claimed to have had two-factor authentication enabled but later clarified that he did receive an email and his steam guard was not up at the time.
Replying to a comment on the post, launders said that he received a message on steam asking him to hold a spot in a (fake) tournament which required him to scan a QR code to login. He mentions that the message was from an account on his friends list which was hacked.
The fake tournament narrative is a common approach to the well known and notorious API scam. When the victim logs in through the counterfeit site set up by the scammer, the victim's account is instantly compromised, giving away an API key for the scammer to initiate and complete trades very quickly. Launders followed up in the comments updating on the situation, mentioning that all of the accounts used in the scam were banned.
