Esports now officially recognized in Sweden
In a historic development, the Swedish Esports Association has achieved official recognition from the country's National Sports Confederation, following a significant vote of 108-71 on May 28. This momentous decision comes after a notable difference of opinion within the Confederation's board, which had initially recommended member associations to reject the inclusion of the Esports Association. However, the majority of members chose to disregard this recommendation, leading to a divergent outcome.
The National Sports Confederation in Sweden serves as an umbrella organization, comprising 179 sports associations. As a unified front, the confederation represents these associations in dealings with various entities, including the government, while also offering financial support and grants for agreed-upon initiatives.
The Swedish Esports Association had been actively pursuing membership in the Confederation for a considerable period, as reported by the Swedish newspaper Expressen. Previous attempts had proved unsuccessful, raising hopes for a breakthrough during the recent National Sports Meeting. A rejection by the associations at this event would have entailed a two-year wait before the next vote on the Esports Association's entry.
Opposition from the Confederation's leadership can typically be a discouraging factor for any aspiring association, nevertheless, several individual associations advocated in favor of the Esports Association's admittance.
This recognition marks a significant milestone for the Swedish Esports Association, solidifying its position within the sports landscape and setting a precedent for the acknowledgment of esports as a legitimate and influential force within the nation's sporting fabric.
