HLTV introduces "Rating 2.1"
As of today, HLTV introduces the "Rating 2.1" and will implement the same across stats and match pages to evaluate game data and assign players their appropriate numerical values- the "HLTV Rating 2.1". This rollout comes after a year of CS2 experience, prompting adjustments to the rating system to better reflect the game's current state.
The core structure of the rating formula remains intact, still utilizing ten sub-ratings that evaluate performance across various aspects of play on both T and CT sides. These include factors such as kills, survival rates, damage output, KAST (Kills, Assists, Survived, Traded), and overall impact.
However, some fine-tuning has been applied to the formula initially introduced in 2017. These modifications aim to recalibrate the system, taking into account changes like the move to MR12 and the new 26-damage assist threshold, which differs from CS:GO's previous 41-damage requirement.
One notable adjustment is the reduced emphasis on saving, with the formula now offering less reward for this aspect of play. Additionally, the rating system has been calibrated to maintain an average rating of 1.00 over the course of a CS2 event, restoring a benchmark that had gradually shifted since the introduction of Rating 2.0 in 2017.
While these changes have been implemented, it's worth noting that a more comprehensive update, tentatively called Rating 3.0, is currently in development. This suggests that further refinements to the player evaluation system may be on the horizon.
When Counter-Strike 2 entered the pro scene, players began to outperform their expected values from CS:GO, resulting the theoretical average to go up to 1.06, which Rating 2.1 now adjusts back to 1.00 with lowered points across a few paraments.
Rating 1.0 was initially introduced way back in 2010 by Petar "Tgwri1s" Milovanovic aiming to improve player evaluations over the K/D ratio. While the formula behind the HLTV Ratings remain hidden, the infographic below shows a few elements that influence the ratings:
Changelog
-
Averages adjusted using 1 year of Counter-Strike 2 data
-
Average rating returned to 1.00 over an event
-
All five sub-ratings now have equal weight, after survival, impact, and KAST became too important in CS2 for rating 2.0
-
Survivals in lost rounds (saving) gives a lower reward
-
Assisted kills give more reward than in 2.0, because of 26 damage assists rather than 41
