Vitality 2-0 Heroic to win IEM Rio
Vitality are the champions of IEM Rio. The team lifted their first trophy of the year after defeating Heroic 2-0 in a strong run through the tournament. The highlight of the run was their win over Cloud9 which included a massive Vertigo comeback and a dupreeh 40 bomb. With the BLAST.TV Major Paris coming up soon, Vitality has gotten a much-needed confidence boost and will look to come into the org's home event in peak form.
The game started on Vitality's pick of Vertigo, the venue of their historic comeback versus Cloud9. However, this time, the bees remained in the lead for most of the game. The half was a 7-1 start but fizzled out into an 8-7 score-line before Heroic managed to grab the lead at 9-11. The defence of Vitality was impenetrable, with Magisk being a standout performer on the CT side.
Moving into the second map, Heroic should've answered back on their pick for Inferno. But apEX, largely missing from the first map and had a 0.72 rating, stepped up alongside ZywOo's AWP to put Heroic on the first plane back to Copenhagen. The two combined for 45 frags, putting Vitality at a 10-5 advantage in the first half.
While Jabbi and cadiaN tried to keep the game competitive, even pulling the teams into a tied game at 11-a-piece, aggression from Vitality proved too tough to beat. The international squad broke Heroic's economy and cruised to a relatively easy victory on the final map.
ZywOo and Spinx maintained their position as the top-performing players of the tournament, but ZywOo beat his Israeli teammate to win the MVP award. This was the squad's second trophy together, proving again that they are a contender for events going into the Paris Major. Will ZywOo and apEX win the final CS:GO Major on home soil? Or will the pressure prove too much for the international mix?
Meanwhile, Heroic will have to regroup after their 3rd finals loss in the last 6 months. They'll need every ounce of performance in their tanks if they want to win the Major and cement their position as the number one ranked team in the world.
