Steam's recording feature arrives in public build
Around four months back, Valve announced a massive new feature integrated into the Steam client that would allow players to record and share gameplay footage across various titles as long as they supported the Steam overlay. In beta at the time, the feature came with a timeline UI that included informative markers for ease of use.
After four months of testing, starting in late July, the feature has now been integrated into the public build, open to the entire userbase. Game recordings are saved directly to the user's hard drive and comes with different encoding settings to cater to a variety of PC configurations. Game recording can be enabled by going through the following path:
Settings → Game Recording → Background / On Demand recording
Gameplay can be recorded in the background automatically when the game starts or it can be manually triggered through dedicated hotkeys. Once a specified amount of storage space is met, the earliest recordings are overwritten. Once gameplay is recorded or clipped through this feature you can:
-
Save footage and related timeline info as a Clip that can be watched, edited, shared and/or exported later
-
Save an MP4 of your current selection
-
Convert selected recording to MP4 ready to paste anywhere
-
Send a Clip to another device (ex. from your Steam Deck to your desktop PC)
-
Send an MP4 via the Steam Mobile App or a QR code
-
Create a temporary Steam link to MP4 video
The game recording feature even works with non-steam games manually added to the library as long as the game supports Steam overlay. A timeline appears on clips indicating the current state of the game, game events, screenshots, achievements, etc.
