CS:GO gets a legacy version

CS:GO to remain a frozen build on steam

As speculated previously, Valve has decided to keep a legacy version of CS:GO as a frozen build on steam permanently. It can be accessed by:

  • Right clicking on Counter-Strike 2 in the Steam library

  • Selecting "properties"

  • Navigating to the "Betas" tab on the left

  • Selecting "csgo_legacy - Legacy Version of CS:GO" under "Beta Participation"

A 12GB download (~30GB when unpacked) gets initiated and can be opened upon selecting the legacy version from the CS2 startup window. This legacy version retains all of CS:GO features except for official matchmaking.

With CS:GO's support ending on 1st January 2024, Valve has stated that certain functionality like accessing inventory might degrade or fail as it depends on compatibility with the game coordinator.

As per Valve's FAQ section on Steam MAC users and DirectX9 or 32-bit Windows users falling under certain criteria are eligible for refunds until 1st December 2023.
